Best Outdoor Portrait Locations on Oʻahu for Women
A Photographer’s Guide to Hawaiʻi’s Most Beautiful Spots
Oʻahu is one of the most beautiful places in the world for outdoor portrait photography. There is such an abundance of natural light, vibrant landscapes, breathtaking beaches, and striking mountains. Women especially love getting portraits here because there is something empowering about posing amongst Mother Earth’s tropical, gorgeous, island settings. Additionally, female photographers thrive here and seem to have a unique skill when it comes to working with clients in such a soft, beachy, yet adventurous place. So, I’m here to tell you about some of the best photography locations in Hawaii (on Oʻahu specifically), so that you can excel in outdoor women’s portrait photography.
In this guide, I am sharing the best portrait locations on Oʻahu for women, and I chose places that offer the most stunning visual storytelling and natural beauty. These are sure to enhance the experience of any and all women looking to book a portrait session.
1: Lanikai Beach — Soft Light & Elegant Simplicity
For women who are looking for feminine, soft, vibrant portraits, Lanikai Beach is the first location to suggest. This spot is great for both sunrise and sunset. Make sure you arrive a good amount of time before the scheduled shoot because finding a parking spot along the street in the surrounding neighborhood is always a bit of a challenge. Cell service is also known to be spotty. I promise it’s worth it, because the pastel skies and calm water with the Mokes (two small uninhabited islets) in the background are stunning.
As a local Oʻahu Portrait Photographer, doing Lanikai Beach portraits is the way to go for peaceful, romantic, airy photos. Be sure to ALWAYS be respectful of the rowing team members, local beach-goers, and even the occasional animal that may also be enjoying this World renown beach.
2: Kualoa Regional Park — Bold Backdrops & Feminine Strength
If your client is drawn to bold energy and dramatic landscapes, Kualoa Regional Park is the location that immediately comes to mind. The Koʻolau mountains create one of the most powerful backdrops on the island. This is a perfect pairing for women who want their portraits to reflect confidence, identity, and presence.
Kualoa offers wide open grassy areas, quiet little pockets of beach, and rows of palm trees that add texture and movement to every shot. This variety allows for a full, dynamic gallery without ever leaving the park. Whether you’re shooting branding photos, maternity, or creative portraits, the energy here is unmistakably strong and cinematic.
This location is especially ideal on overcast days when the mountains feel moody and textured. Make sure to specify with your client which parking lot you’ll meet them at (there are a few). I always opt for the first parking lot when you turn into the park, yet if it’s full, the second closest one isn’t a bad choice. There are also often many fishermen with their lines anchored right off the shore in the evenings, so try and keep your distance from them if you’re choosing to end your shoot in the water.
3: Crouching Lion Overlook — Dramatic Views & Adventurous Energy
For women who love a little adventure with their portraits, the Crouching Lion overlook offers some of the most breathtaking views on Oʻahu. The hike itself is short but steep, so it’s best suited for clients who are comfortable with uneven terrain and don’t mind a bit of effort to reach something extraordinary. Once you’re at the top, the landscape opens into sweeping views of Kahana Bay, lush ridgelines, and layered greens that look like something out of a dream.
This location is powerful, raw, and deeply connected to nature. It’s perfect for women who want portraits that feel grounded, honest, and bold. Because of the elevation and airflow, there’s always some movement in hair and clothing, which adds to the organic beauty of the session. The light here changes quickly, so aim for late afternoon to get warmth without harshness.
Make sure you all wear shoes that you can safely hike in, and bring everything your client needs in a small backpack. The hike takes about 25-30 minutes both ways, so keep that in mind and don’t forget to bring some face towels to help cool down and recompose once you’re at the top! Having extra makeup on hand is nice, too.
Finally, keep an eye on the weather report. If it rained at all the day of your shoot and there’s a chance the trail is muddy, I would absolutely reschedule. I don’t take any risks when it comes to safety, and this hike, with its steepness, is notorious for being un-hikable when even remotely wet. Be smart and stay flexible!
4: Magic Island — Urban Simplicity Meets Tropical Calm
Magic Island is one of the most versatile and accessible portrait locations on Oʻahu, and women love it for its clean, minimal backdrops and soft tropical energy. Located right within Ala Moana Beach Park, it offers a quiet blend of green grassy fields, calm water, distant city skyline, and coconut trees — all within a short walking distance.
This spot is ideal for women who want portraits that feel modern yet organic, with just a hint of urban influence. It’s also one of the easiest locations logistically, with plenty of parking and accessible walkways, making it great for clients who prefer a low-stress, no-hike-required session. I will note, however, getting a close parking spot to Magic Island is only something you can bank on for an early sunrise shoot. Even then, give yourself 5-10 minutes to walk from the main parking lot to Magic Island. It gets busy around sunset, especially on the weekends.
Magic Island is especially strong for branding portraits, lifestyle images, and sessions where movement, comfort, and variety matter. It has enough scenery to give you multiple looks without ever losing that soft Hawaiʻi glow.
5: Mānoa Falls Trail — Lush Greenery & Jungle Light
Mānoa Falls is one of Oʻahu’s most enchanting portrait locations, especially for women who love greenery, texture, and a little bit of cinematic rainforest magic. The trail is surrounded by towering bamboo, sprawling vines, soft filtered light, and that unmistakable jungle atmosphere that feels both peaceful and alive. If your client is looking for portraits that feel exotic or earthy, this is the place.
The hike to the falls is relatively easy and takes about 20–30 minutes, though it can be muddy after rain, so it’s best to come prepared with good shoes and maybe a small towel. Once you reach the waterfall, the backdrop is dramatic but still intimate — a perfect blend of feminine softness against a strong, natural landscape. Keep in mind, sometimes the waterfall itself is closed. I can promise that there are plenty of incredible backdrops along the way, though!
What makes Mānoa Falls Trail truly special for women’s portrait photography is the light. Because of the canopy of trees, everything is naturally diffused, giving portraits a moody quality without harsh shadows. The greens here are vibrant and deep, creating a rich color palette that feels completely different from the beaches.
If your client wants something lush, tropical, and quietly powerful, Mānoa Falls Trail is a stunning and memorable choice for a portrait session.
